Quick answer
Later tasks stay locked until the required earlier task in the same chain is complete.
Progress belongs to the selected subject.
Bob challenges require Bob. A Hatchet chain requires the Hatchet. A Michael variant chain belongs to that Michael track. Playing another subject will not advance this chain.

Mechanics
How Progressive Challenges Work
Four steps. The chain is what separates Progressive from Passive and from Prestige.
Step 1 · Published by the game
Choose a subject
A Progressive chain belongs to one Civilian, one Michael variant or one weapon. The chain you are progressing is the subject you are playing.
Step 2 · Chain structure
Complete the current task
Each task has its own tracked requirement and target. Match that exact action instead of a similar one.
Step 3 · Chain structure
Unlock the next task
Later tasks depend on the previous challenge in the chain. An open task stays locked until the one before it is complete.
Step 4 · Chain structure
Continue through the chain
Rewards are granted along the progression path rather than all at once, so each step is worth checking.
Troubleshooting
Progressive Challenge Not Progressing?
Most cases are a chain problem rather than a missing objective, so check the subject and the previous task first.
Check these in order
- Are you playing the right subject?
- The chain only advances with the specific Civilian, Michael variant or weapon it belongs to.
- Is the previous task complete?
- A later task cannot progress while the task before it is still open. Read the chain in order.
- Did you perform the exact tracked action?
- Two tasks can sound alike and still track different counters. Use the task requirement as the definition.
- Are you looking at the same chain you selected?
- The Progressive Challenge screen shows the chain for the subject you are on. Compare it to the chain on this page.
- Still stuck on one task?
- Open the subject chain and check the current task, its target and its exact requirement before assuming a bug.
Passive vs Progressive
Which Challenge System Is This?
Both names sound similar, so this is the short version. The Challenges hub covers all three systems in full.
| Question | Passive | Progressive |
|---|---|---|
| What is it bound to? | A Killer or Civilian role. | One specific Civilian, Michael variant or weapon. |
| How does it progress? | Automatic background tracking. | An ordered chain, one task at a time. |
| What decides the next step? | Increasing milestone thresholds. | The previous task must be complete. |
| How do you browse it? | By Challenge family. | By Civilian, Michael variant or weapon. |
Progressive vs Prestige
Not the Same as Prestige
Both can be tied to a character or a weapon, which is exactly why they get mixed up.
Progressive
A fixed ordered challenge chain tied to one subject. The tasks are the same every run.
Prestige
A separate endgame system that draws from tier-specific challenge pools, so the tasks are not a fixed chain.
Story
Looking for Story Challenges?
Story Mode uses a separate set of chapter-specific optional challenges. They are not part of any Progressive chain.
If you are replaying Michael's Story and completing optional objectives, that is a different system with its own tracking and troubleshooting.
FAQ
Progressive Challenges FAQ
- What are Progressive Challenges?
- Ordered Challenge chains tied to a specific Civilian, Michael variant or weapon. Later tasks depend on earlier tasks, so the chain advances one step at a time.
- How many Progressive Challenges are in the current data?
- The current build contains 350 tasks across 24 progression groups. That count is measured from the game itself rather than from an official published list.
- Can I progress Bob's challenges while playing Annie?
- No. A Progressive chain belongs to its specific subject, so progress only happens with the matching Civilian, Michael variant or weapon.
- Why is my next Progressive Challenge locked?
- Progressive tasks are sequential. The next task stays locked until the required previous task in that chain is complete.
- Are Progressive and Passive Challenges the same?
- No. Passive Challenges track role-wide cumulative milestones automatically, while Progressive Challenges are subject-specific ordered chains.
- Are Progressive Challenges the same as Prestige Challenges?
- No. Prestige uses a separate tier-based challenge-pool system, not a fixed ordered chain tied to one subject.
